Does your Dimension or Bioscope system suffer from excessive Z-center position retraction?

What you see on your monitor is on engage the Z-center position immediately starts to retract, in some cases going fully retracted and off scale.

What is happening is on engage the entire Z-stage continues to slide downward just a bit. The probe is pushing hard into the sample. The piezo, to compensate for it, retracts upward. It can only do that so much, if it is retracting more than 50V that is a sign of trouble, if it goes off scale that is a real problem because your tip is still being pushed into the surface.

If the piezo is able to retract, stabilize, and still stay on scale, let’s say to -100V, you are now scanning with a zero center position of -100V constantly being applied to your scanner. This an excessive amount of voltage, which over time will damage your scanner.
